ID EEL HAUS DES MEERES

Can you tell me the name of this eel? In salt eater. Haus des meeres, Wien (Austria)
Congrogadus. I'm not familiar enough with individual species in this genus to say which species. Despite it's common name, this is not an eel at all - it is a much closer relative of damselfishes, dottybacks and cichlids. Many taxonomies place this genus (and a number of closely related genera) as a subfamily within the family Pseudochromidae, the dottybacks, but recent papers suggest this is erroneous and these genera are better placed in an independent family, Congrogadidae.

@DaLilFishie Putting them in their own separate family would seem better than lumping with the dissimilar dottybacks, that's for sure. If only we could get a better common name for the species that is more clear about what it actually is...

@Great Argus dissimilar indeed, and it seems relatively distantly related too - congrogadids seem to be consistently placed in a clade with Mugilidae (mullets) and Ambassidae (glassfishes) in genetic studies, quite distant from Pseudochromidae (albeit within the same order, Cichliformes sensu Near & Thacker). Their placement in Pseudochromidae was based on morphological taxonomy, which as mammal enthusiasts will know often draws incorrect conclusions!
