The exact subspecies of these specimens would be Indian axis deer (Axis axis axis), there are no longer any Sri lankan axis deer (Axis axis ceylonensis) in captivity outside of Sri Lanka
What contridicts the post above is that Groves and Grubb consider the Sri lankan axis deer (Axis axis ceylonensis) an invalid taxon and prefer to consider Axis deer (Axis axis) as a monotypic species
