I noticed something odd last week. The red-lipped arboreal alligator lizard has a black spot on its lower eyelid. When it's awake it just looks as if it's been heavy handed with an eyeliner pencil: but when it's asleep, as it very often is, it looks as if it's still awake. Might that deter a casual predator?
