I remember this when it was the Giraffe area, their house being the one at the back(right) which is presumbly the rhino indoor area now?
It seems to have become rather an ugly area now, though I believe the intention is to move the Rhinos to a paddock further up the hill in due course to give them more space.
The ground has been raised as well to allow for the softer flooring for the Indian rhinos soft spongy feet. It looks spares without any vegetation but if any vegetation was added it would be completely destroyed and eaten in hours most likely. The indoor space to the right is there day time indoor area which also includes an indoor heated pool. The lighting doesn't help either but Jordan was unlucky to have visited on one of the stormiest days of the week! As far as I am aware there is no plan to move them and Edinburgh Zoo is quite happy to be a training/holding facility for young "adolescent" rhinos.
They have an indoor night area as well which is in the left. The travel crate is kept in place and is sometimes used as the access route into the night house to allow them to get used to the crate, especially when it gets close to moving time.
So no plans to move them higher up the hill then? Actually I think they are better off where they are as 'hills' and Indian Rhinos really aren't a good mix as they are so heavy and live entirely on flat ground (the terai grasslands) in the wild. I think Edinburgh's 'holding' role for transient young males is a valuable one.
