Japanese Badger (Meles anakuma)

Kogawa Dam, Izumi (Kyushu), January 2025
My first Japanese mammal - and it is a badger in the middle of the day! I'm actually surprised any of the photos turned out well enough to edit into something because it was about fifty feet up what was basically a cliff, foraging mostly in and under leaf litter. I spent about an hour trying to get clear photos without a lot of success. I do like this one a lot though. From this photo one might imagine a Japanese Badger to look like a European Badger, but they are much smaller and the body is mostly brown.

@Dr. Wolverine it was certainly a surprise to me also - both in terms of being in the daytime and being the first mammal I saw. I thought my first mammal in Japan would be a Red Fox or something like that.
