Javan hawk eagles are kept among others in Taman Mini (Jakarta), Safari Bogor, Safari Surabaya, Chikananga rescue station and perhaps elsewhere. Again there are well over 20 individuals in zoos in Indonesia.
The bird park at Taman Mini had already closed (early!) for the day when I got there so I didn't see which species there were in there.
Just curious as to where you come up with a figure of "well over 20 individuals" in Indonesian zoos when you say "and perhaps elsewhere" (my italics) after noting only four other facilities, all of which probably only have one or two individuals.
Taman Mini had 4 individuals in the year 2006, Cikananga also 4 or 5, Taman Safari Bogor 2, Taman Safari Surabaya 3. There were also some birds of that species in Biak falconry on New Guinea in the early 2000's. What had happened to all of them I don't know as the place is most probably defunct now. Judging from number of smaller zoos that routinely add birds from the market to collection there may be 20 or more captive bartelsi in Indonesia. I suspect mortality is high as Spizaetus is a nervous genus and prone to injuries. They are also in significant part bird eaters and ffeding might be another problem in Indonesian zoos (they will not thrive on usuall fatty beef diet). Good enough to fund a sound breeding programme. there even was an attempt by Indonesian ZOO Association to create such a program to be coordinated by a person from Taman Mini. Whether or not this is up and running remain to be seen.
