Nice picture, but what are they doing here? I've been going to SeaWorld San Diego for a while now. I've never seen an orca even touch the wall of their exhibit, much less sit on their bottom or do whatever Orkid is doing (scratching?). I've never seen them do anything in the underwater viewing beyond swimming or doing Dine With Shamu shows,to be honest.

I got there as early as possible and when I arrived at the exhibit Ulises and Orkid were still sleeping. Her at the right end and Uli on the left. If you find my photo of Ulises erect, that's the original position he was in. In that position he was floating vertically down until he planked himself to the floor and continued his rest. As what Orkid is doing, she, like all the other orcas at every SeaWorld relieve their itches by scratching themselves on a certain spot. That's their spot.

Ah,I see. I've honestly never arrived before 11 am,so I've never had the opportunity to see them resting. Thanks for the info!

They both look like pieces of modern art in this picture. It's something I might expect to see in a sculpture gallery. Orkid and Uli do what they want, obviously.

Agreed. Orkid is essentially the perfect female orca, and Ulisses is truly an impressive male, even with the hooked dorsal. It is worth noting that this beauty is the oldest captive-born orca, and the one who's survived longest in captivity, which almost mirrors her "mother's" record of being one of the oldest individuals in captivity at all. Let's hope she breaks more barriers,as she is truly a wonderful individual.

I hope so too.

I was just thinking that they look sort of like wind up toys, that the trainers need to come crank them up so they can start their day.
