Juvenile Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes)

May 2022, Penguin Place, Dunedin
Penguin Place is a rescue and rehabilitation centre in Dunedin, for local and vagrant penguins. The majority of the birds which come through are Yellow-eyed Penguins, but they also get various crested penguins during the year. They had just released two Erect-crested Penguins (Eudyptes sclateri) a couple of weeks before my visit.

The bird in this photo is a six-month old juvenile. Note the lack of colour on its head.
