Kabili was a twin, born to Zabulu and Kiraka in 2016. Due to her twin (who died as a neonate) being male, it’s believed Kabili is a freemartin (sterile). It’s an observed phenomenon in dairy cattle, who produce male-female twins, where the heifer calf is usually sterile. If this is the case, it would be only the second time this has been documented in giraffes in captivity.
