@Summer Tanager They have kagu in two aviaries and blue couas in at least six aviaries. According to ZTL they had 11 male and 7 female blue couas in 2022 and breed the species regularly. Unfortunately Walsrode no longer has female kagus, the only remaining female kagu in Europe is in Berlin.
The many rare and special bird species were my main reason for the trip to Walsrode, and the place certainly did not disappoint.
@KevinB Walsrode is certainly a place that I would love to visit! I'm sorry to hear that there are so few Kagu left in Europe - I had assumed that several zoos in France kept this species because New Caledonia is a French territory. I was lucky enough to see two pairs of Blue Couas at the San Diego Zoo in 2020 (a couple of months prior to the pandemic). These birds had been imported from the breeding group at Walsrode.
