The Kayak "trail" flows around the whole Expedition Africa area and there are several animals that can only be viewed on the kayaks or by train which runs along the western edge of the zoo. As for the price, Im not sure...I cant seem to find the pricing on the zoo's website. From my personal files, back in 2002 it cost $3 for the kayaking tour.
This post made me very curious about this zoo. I´d like to think that I have looked through every zoo gallery on this site but apparently I may have missed one or two. This would have to be one of them.
And what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! I looked at all the pictures in the gallery, checked out the web site of the zoo´s and googled a bit for some more pictures. I liked most of what I saw and I think that what particularly turned me on was the subtle, yet very effective, landscaping work done in the zoo.
Most exhibits look brilliant - but I don´t think that millions of dollars were spent? Perhaps the zoo being situated in Florida explains it? Warm climate and all...
Overall I found the zoo very disappointing. The kayak ride is probably the best part. You are right that they did not spend millions though. When they moved to the current site, a lot of it was built with volunteer labor.

How long did it take you to tour this zoo? What other Florida attractions have you visited? I have seen your comments in the gallery and it seems that you spent some time in 2009 visiting a handful of Florida zoos and I value your input as you and I see eye-to-eye in regards to most captive wildlife establishments.
It was actually before 2009 - that is just the year I joined ZooChat. I have made four trips to central Florida from the mid 1990's to mid 2000's, so obviously I like it a lot.
I was at Brevard Zoo with my cousin (who also enjoys zoo photography) and I think we were there maybe four hours?
I have also seen:
Busch Gardens (several times - I like it)
Florida Aquarium (once but I like it)
Lowry Park Zoo (several times - I like it more than most here)
Palm Beach Zoo (once and much nicer than I expected)
Disney Animal Kingdom (boo, hiss - this is where I go against most on this forum)
Big Cat Rescue (used to be good when it was Wildlife On Easy Street, but I would not support them now that the founder has gone berzerk and is trying to shut down every zoo in the country, often with outright lies)
Turpentine Creek Wildlife Sanctuary (now closed)
