Kea - 1982

Of all the former residents of the LA Zoo that you have posted pictures of, this is the species that I most would of like to have seen. I always wanted to see one and finally did in Seattle, but it would be great if LA had them. Did you just find a lost cache of photos from 1982?

Speaking of New Zealand species Blackduiker, did you ever actually see the kiwi in all of the years that it was allegedly at the LA Zoo? I never saw it despite trying many times. They had it in a fully lit enclosure so of course it was never going to come out (if it was even there to begin with:rolleyes:).

This was one of the, what I like to refer to as, "overflow species" on exhibit in the old Children's Zoo for several years. The huge former aviary complex, recently torn down due to the construction of Rainforest of the Americas, apparently had no room for them. The Children's Zoo, both the old and current one, have always been a first stop on any visit for me. And yes David, though usually only a quick darting glimpse, I was able to spot the Kiwi on several occasions. Did you know that before they were exhibited outdoors, their first home was a nocturnal indoor habitat? A converted round house where the Komodo Dragons now live, that also included Tasmanian Devils, in a space next to them. It had very dim lighting, and you were more likely to glimpse the Devils rather than the Kiwis. L.A.'s first nocturnal exhibit by the way. Opening several years before the now closed Koala House.

And the older photos I've been posting of late, are the result of a recent garage cleaning discovery of some of my old photo albums. Look for several more posts soon; yes, there are a few more. I've been photographing the LA Zoo residents for many years now! :)

Thanks for the info on the kea and confirmation that there really was a kiwi. I do remember the night house with the Tasmanian devil from my 1988 visit.

I look forward to more LA Zoo history. It is very interesting and fun to time travel. I was watching "Escape From The Planet Of The Apes" (the one where the chimps come back to 1970s Earth from the future) and there are some shots of the LA Zoo from that era (the intelligent apes are brought to the zoo after they crash their spaceship in the Pacific).

I remember seeing that movie in the theater when it was originally released. For more LA Zoo nostalgia, the opening of the 70s show "Three's Company" is mentioned by others on ZooChat. There was another 70s show, "The Mod Squad" where I remember an episode that involved the White Rhinoceros exhibit. Someone was trying to make their way out of the exhibit, as one of the rhinos was charging them.
