Car tires in exhibits have some benefits, as they can provide enrichment for the inhabitants. It's a soft surface to lean on, there can be treats hidden inside, and a tire can even be a water source during the rainy season, but nevertheless the sight of them irks me. A tire reminds me of old-fashioned primate enclosures, and therefore I always cringe when seeing them in modern zoos.
