Several have made remarks about the "mown lawn" look of this exhibit, but a closer look at the ground surface, show's that its thick and rather bumpy appearance would make mowing it virtually impossible. Apparently a low growing grass was used over much of the exhibit. What would improve the appearance would be at least one of the unused large trees, seen in a couple of my photos, being planted for climbing and shade. And a bit more foliage here and there, with unlimited access for the Gorillas to them.
Of course the reflective window viewing; another oft pointed out negative critism of the habitat, could be solved by simply totally covering the canopies that overhang the windowed viewing areas. This would provide for a much better sun shield.

Yup, the grass is different compared to the one we are used to. I've had the chance to actually walk inside the exhibit at least 5 times and every time my shoe would sink at least 2 inches. Basically, it is a very spongy grass. I have a feeling it was chosen so that it can be comfortable for the gorillas.
