Congrat gentle lemur ! Are they so rare in the UK ? Took care for them at both Walsrode and Paira Daiza ( at the time it was still known as Parc Paradisio ). BTW nice picture !

Thank you. King eiders have only been held at a few collections in the UK. I saw them regularly when I lived near Slimbridge in 1974, when it was probably the largest collection of waterfowl in the world. Since then I have missed them entirely, which is why I was determined to get to Living Coasts before this lovely drake went into moult.

When is the best time of year to catch the drake in breeding plumage? Whenever I've managed to get down there, he's always in eclipse...

Waterfowl start to moult during incubation, so they look their best before the breeding season. I guess this drake will start his second moult quite soon, so that his plumage is in top condition for insulation and for display in the winter.
