Lake Victoria Cichlid (Haplochromis riponianus) 27 October 1993

Lake Victoria Cichlid (Haplochromis riponianus)
they were very lucky to have these, Do they still keep them, if so are they breeding them?

No they don't. Chester still has Haplochromis pyrrhocephalus and Yssichromis 'argens' which has not yet been described. Both species have been kept since 1992.

Other Lake Victoria Cichlid's they have kept are H.obliquidens (1993-1999), H.riponianus (1992-2003), H.sauvagei (1992-2001) and H.xenognathus (1992-2002).

All 6 species were successfully bred, and Professor Reid the Director started the breeding programmes for Lake Victoria Cichlids when he was the curator of the Horniman Museum in London. I don't really know why the collection has mostly been dispersed but I would guess it was to provide more space for the Madagascan cichlids.

Hi,
Are any of these species still maintained by anyone - in a private collection for example.
I have had an interest in fishes from the Victorian Basin for many years and have been lucky enough to have kept over a dozen species, one of which i think may have been H.riponianus (about 8 years ago-maybe more).
I never did get a possitive ID for them and didn't have a camera at the time.

Does the zoo ever release any fry ?

Umm, noticing the picture above the fish i had was similar body shape when older but much darker almost a velvet black with a green sheen across the flank with bright red fins.
I know it was not a Nubila, but looked like the fish pictured in Axelrod's most complete lexicon of cichlids pg414 when young.
I may never know what they really were
