I use a software called Corel Painter Essentials 6, which I go for free when I bought a Wacom Tablet which makes it a lot easier to draw things on the computer. It takes a while to draw these things though because I have to do all the colour in layers otherwise bits underneath stick out, so whilst it is much more forgiving, it also takes a while and a great deal of concentration, although I normally draw the landscapes in the maps between school lessons/when I'm half asleep
It can be really frustrating at times, but it is really useful for what I'm doing so I guess it is worth it. I have done 10 out of ~23 animals for the map and most of the landscape, so shouldn't be too long now...
A bit late, but I did recognize it at one of the larger maps before reading the species. Might help though that I've already seen this species dozens of times.
