Bernhard Grzimek traveled around Serengeti ecosystem with this plane. His Oscar winning movie and Best selling book "Serengeti Shall Not Die" from 1959 are the main reasons for creation of National Park Serengeti. Sadly his son Michael died in a crash with the same plane ..
That's a good and proper reason for the plane's presence. In my opinion, the wrecked aeroplanes that appear in so many other zoo exhibits are ugly and unnecessary and in very poor taste.
