The underwater viewing of Asian elephants in the Elephant Temple in the Asia-theme in Leipzig Zoo.
As soon as the elephants get in the water gets just a big murky :P

I wonder how thick that glass/acrylic is? Is Leipzig the only zoo in the world to have this awesome feature?

I have thought underwater elephant viewing would be cool. Now I see at least one place has done it. I wonder, along with ashley, if any other zoos have tried this?

now that would look really cool to view elephants under water.

An interesting idea but I wonder how successful it is. How often doe the elephant go into the water? And as previously mentioned is the visibility any good once they get in and stir up any sediment?

There is a fixed bathing time every morning. The elephants are sprayed by a hose and the keepers throw vegetables into the pool, which is usually enough to encourage them to go swimming without being forced with bullhooks. The visibility is only good for the very first moments and then gets very low, I don`t think it`s worth the costs.

Yes - it's spectacular but brief - we got maybe 10min of reasonable viewing then it was a lost cause.

Luckily the room has certain scaly mammalian distractions. ;)
