This photo makes it easier to see how there is a hidden moat separating the lions from the antelope/ostrich/warthogs on the savanna, and then there is another moat much further out that separates the savanna animals from the elephant exhibit. This area, East Africa on the Caldwell map, is arguably the most impressive section of the zoo.
