Does anyone know how large this lion exhibit is? Can such a vast enclosure be effective at allowing the public glimpses of Africa's largest species of cat?

And is this the only viewing angle?
It looks like it goes back a long way but it is quite narrow (I assume it ends at the row of trees on the right hand side). Viewing along one of the longer sides would be more effective.

I believe it's 1 hectare there is also viewing from an observation tower at the far end of the enclosure.

It is huge. There is additional viewing from inside the "kopje" shown in the photo, accessed via a long tunnel.

And a huge viewing tower AND a window in the lion house. Also there is a second exhibit with older animals where you see always lions. In the big exhibit are 3,2 lions.

Much as I love Wuppertal, this enclosure seems to be a little bit too large, really: is it ever possible to get a good view of the lions in this main enclosure? And do these most sedentary of animals actually benefit from so much space? If the enclosure was to be so large, I wonder whether some sort of walkway, such as at Rhenen's bear enclosure, might have been incorporated?

An interesting photo, and an interesting discussion. I find it very hard to see the justification for this facility; Wuppertal isn't so big that it can afford to give over 2.5 acres to (presumably) zoo lions of no particular genetic importance.
