This lion exhibit opened in 1989 and in Gary K. Clarke's (long-term director) autobiography he spends many pages discussing the planning and intimate details of Lions Pride. Interestingly enough he admits to being frustrated and disappointed with "what we did not accomplish, with Lions Pride". There were many smaller African species taken out of the complex and a series of interactive elements that were never constructed due to time-constraints and budget issues.
