Is this cage still holding lions or has it been demolished by now? I fear the former, and it is cages like these that give zoos a bad name all over the world. I know plenty of people that think zoos are nasty prisons, when in fact there are many beautiful, wonderful collections worldwide. It is tough to convince the anti-zoo lobbyists of the splendour of zoos when that group of individuals has a lot of ammunition to fire at the pro-zoo crowd.

but relics like these also highlight just how far many zoos have come and help discredit the anti lobby. If youd never visited a great modern zoo because you were told that all zoos looked like this, wouldnt you feel cheated by the realisation of such lies within minutes of your first visit.
