Lion

Undated postcard of a lion at the Bristol Zoo.
these are the old cat cages, which were behind the current twilight world.

the twighlight world used to be a ape house (with orangs (both types), gorillas and Chimps (until the last one, anne, went to twycross zoo in 1977)) then the old ape cages were converted into the cat terrance, whats left of the cat cages (by the twighlight world) is the Asiatic lion enclosure, there are no longer any other cats at bristol, exepct for the arabian (or are they egyptian?) sand cats in the twighlight world

You were right the first time! :) They're Arabian Sand Cats - Felis margarita harrisoni.

The Lion House(as in this postcard) was on the site of the Twilight World, not behind it which is the perimeter wall of the Zoo. This central outside Lion cage was roughly on the site of the Red Panda outside now.

The chimp that went to Twycross was 'Eve' (Anne was an Orangutan).

Chronology; THis Lion House was demolished circa 1974/75 to be replaced by the 'new' Ape House. Apes were transferred from the original Ape House(formerly also a Lion House) which was then demolished.

Five Cat enclosures were built on the site of the former Ape House, then enlarged and finally became the Asian Lion enclosure as it is now.

The 'modern' Ape House became 'Twilight World' after Orangs and Chimps left and Gorillas moved to Gorilla Island (though there was a brief period when there were no Gorillas either).
