This is the old Hippo exhibit. This exhibit was demolished to make way for Pachyderm Forest. The zoo currently has one male hippo which is exhibited in the former Indian Rhino exhibit.
I'm glad this exhibit is no longer there; too little land space even if I seem to recall the pool being of all right size. I assume Hippopotamus will be a part of the Pachyderm Forest when it is ready?

No, the hippos won't be part of Pachyderm Forest. The original plan was to build Elephants of Surin for elephants and right next to it Kiboko Cove, which was going to be the Hippo exhibit.
Pressure from the Animal Rights Activists, pushed the City of Los Angeles to increase the size of the Elephant's exhibit. This canceled out, not only plans for the Hippo enclosure, but for Black and Indian Rhinos as well. And the activist still aren't happy, and probably wouldn't be if they increased the current 6 acre Pachyderm Forest to 60 acres.
I actually miss this hippo exhibit, and I think the old elephant exhibit was suitable for a herd of more than 3 elephants, and @Blackduiker I totally agree with you, I dont think animal rights extremists would be happy even if the elephant exhibit was expanded to 600 acres (bigger then the whole current zoo itself)

- No offense but seeing there one elephant billy in his old exhibit was depressing. The exhibit could not fit 3 as you say and a new exhibit was greatly needed. You also say you miss this exhibit but it had barely any land area and was barren and concrete. Exhibits like this deserved to be bulldozed. I agree that space in an elephant exhibit is not everything but is a major factor and all exhibits should be at least 2.5 acres.
