Sweetheart arrived with her brother in the 1960s and lived well into the 2000s. I am glad that I got to see her, even if her exhibit was no eye candy. However her keepers must be credited as they did everything they could to enrich her life, judging by the many odd items and toys in the exhibit.

Thank goodness! Another exhibit that was to have been replaced years ago. Maybe one day we'll get Polar Bears back in L.A. again.

I am very glad to see this go. Although they are improving, building major new exhibits at a pretty good pace, there are still way too many old roundhouse exhibits at this zoo. For a world class city like Los Angeles, they really have a second rate zoo. (And this is the zoo I grew up with, so it has a special place in my heart and I really do want them to succeed).

This exhibit has now been demolished to make way for the new reptile house.

I know I'm pretty late to this thread, but I wanted to add that the exhibit wasn't completely demolished. Parts are still visible behind the LAIR.

Yes, you are correct. At the time I posted that comment I had no idea they had kept the back wall. Only when the exhibit opened did I see they kept the wall.

You make a good point. What many would consider the third best city in California has the best zoo. LA Zoo may be second rate, but it isn't third rate like the one in San Francisco.

The LA Zoo is slowly improving. I think further down the line they'll be near-first rate once they renovate some of their older and smaller exhibits (the lion exhibit springs to mind),but their three recent exhibits have been quite nice from what I've seen.
