Los Angeles Zoo - Black Bear Exhibit

August 2008. This enclosure was obviously not originally designed for bears.

The pool and waterfall came years after the original 1966 zoo opening. Sometime during the 1980s. The logs to the right as well. Those grooves you see on the rock work were for the Mouflons, to assist their climbing. Think of the Desert Bighorn Sheep exhibit that is still in use, there are several photos of that exhibit in this gallery. There were also several trees planted for the bears, but they soon destroyed them.

This enclosure, and indeed the whole part of the zoo, is looking a bit tired. A new American Black Bear enclosure is cited in the masterplan for the California section however I do not know when this is expected to open.
