Los Angeles Zoo - Golden Monkey Exhibit

August 2008. A large mesh enclosure that cost a tremendous amount of money and patiently awaits the famous golden monkeys.

I actually found out that the zoo has finally received the permit to get the golden monkeys.

Ahh Mario, how times have changed. At least the Francois langurs have turned out to be a big hit!:)

Yeah, when I heard that the zoo had the permit I was so excited. Too bad China backed out of the deal at the last minute...

Is the Golden Monkey plan completely 100% absolutely unequivocally dead? I'm pretty sure it is but just checking to see if anyone has heard anything else.

Could you share what happened here?

The one time I asked someone who worked at the zoo about this (an education employee who was stationed at one of the exhibits), he said that China had suspended all animal loans to the US because they were mad about the Dalai Lama visiting the US. At that point the zoo apparently was still thinking it was a temporary situation (this was 2009 I think), but it seems like either they gave up and/or China made it clear it was never going to happen.

Maybe someone has more specific details on what actually happened?
