Los Angeles Zoo

Lowland Anoa?
According to ISIS, mountain anoa are only kept in one zoo in Germany "Zoo Krefeld GmbH"

I think Berlin Zoo has the species too now (the zoo's not on ISIS these days). And until recently, Decin in the Czech Republic, but I've a feeling these have gone - not sure if anyone can confirm?

The two species are not easy to tell apart; Krefeld's Mountain Anoas looked quite shaggy when I saw them but this isn't consistent, as you can see from Animal's shot from the same zoo:

Thank you Maguari for the info. Maguari- Do u no if Mountain Anoa's r harder to keep than Lowland. If that is true that may be why there is so little of them.

I'm not aware of any husbandry differences between the two, but it's not impossible.

It may well just be that when anoas were brought into captivity they just started with more Lowlands (more accessible habitat, possibly?).

Not that I'm aware of (slightly unusually for cattle, a group in which about half a dozen species have been domesticated/farmed).

Part of the reason is probably because not only are Anoas quite a bit smaller than most other cattle species, but Anoas are notoriously aggressive. They’ve been known to kill keepers and exhibit mates, including members of their own species. Another example of why you can’t judge something by its size.
