I only saw one pair in this exhibit in November 2013, I also visited last month and access to these cages was closed for renovations. I did see them in the old row of bird cages near Polar Bear Plunge in April and it was a pair again, perhaps they were the same ones moved.

There is a small US captive population (Houston, Dallas World Aquarium, Central Park and Toledo have them as well). However I do not know of anywhere other than the San Diego Zoo which breeds them.

Honolulu has bred them in the past as well. However they have not produced any BoP's for the past 5 years.

As it stands Honululu has at least 5 or six birds. A cock and two hens on display, another pair off exhibit, and I think another female in the back as well.

One irritating thing is that they are very aggressive with each other. They can be kept in pairs, but that's about it. Males fight with each other and hens are EXTREMELY aggressive towards each other, so they need to have a fair bit of space between genders (unlike most others which can be housed communally or side by side with no issues.
