Is it a waterpark? Is it a playground? Oh no, it's one of San Diego Zoo's "natural habitats," in this case representing the Central African rainforest. (right)
Take away all the lush plants on the outside of this (and most of the zoo's exhibits), and you are generally left with crude rockwork, lawns, poorly-disguised barriers, and not much more. Are people really so easily distracted by bamboo, banana plants and a balmy climate?
Great collection--absolutely. Great exhibits--go to Seattle, New York or Tucson, 'cause there aren't any here (except 1986's Kopje and the gharial area).
I'm really not a big fan of these bamboo shelters that have popped up in several primate exhibits at the SD Zoo. I'm sure functionally they serve a purpose, but from a pure aesthetic value, I don't find them very attractive.
