Lowland gorilla gleaning

Walled garden, Howletts, 10th August 2009

This is one of Djanghou's older offspring demonstrating one the greatest benefits of Howletts use of straw in their gorilla enclosures. The gorillas spend a great deal fo time searching for food in the straw, so they are much more active and alert than gorillas in more attractive but less enriching enclosures. This juvenile is blowing the chaff away from an ear of wheat found in the straw.

It was always fascinating to watch the gorillas at Howletts foraging for food amongst the hay , i spent many an hour watching them back then

Possibly: I am sorry that I can only say that it is one of the older youngsters in the Djanghou group.

then it's probably Masindi.
Have you watched any of the other gorillas blow straw in their hands? Do you know if any of the early gorillas at Howletts did that? I am interested in when this might have started.

I can't be specific I'm afraid. I first visited Howletts in 1973, so while I'm sure I have seen if before, I couldn't tell you which gorillas did it or when I saw them doing it.
