I don't know why, but African bush elephants look happier in captivity than Asian elephants, at least as how we people see trough their facial expression.
But obvious comparasion can be made looking at facial expression in wild elephants and those in captivity; happy expression as we, most people percieve it on animals, can be seen in all elephants in the wilderness and in many, but not all, zoo elephants. That make me to believe that if the elephant looks happy to us as we see happines in elephants trough anthropomorphism, than it is really not depressed (happy) since that way are also looking free-roaming elephants in the wilderness (as can be expected live natural normal life without captivity-related stress), is in it?
