Magellan Owl (Bubo magellanicus) at Scottish Owl Centre - 9th August 2016

In European collections, the Southern Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus nacurutu) is often mislabelled as Magellan's Owl (Bubo magellanicus) in captive collections; in point of fact there are only two true members of the latter species on public display within European collections, both of which are at Scottish Owl Centre. Fortunately, these individuals are displayed in an aviary immediately next to one containing Southern Horned Owl, allowing a comparison of the two species to be made.

For comparison, an image of Southern Horned Owl:

Note the differences in colouration and the size of the ear-tufts; another difference which is not as obvious in these images is that the Southern Horned Owl has orange eyes whilst the Magellan Owl has yellow eyes.
