@Great Argus I can't remember having seen one do it before either, might well have been my first time seeing this in real life. It was quite a spectacular thing I'm glad to have seen.
@Goura Yeah I'm glad I've seen it, it is quite something to see. And you're not wrong about this aviary being challenging for photography... there's the mesh as well as the adventure route entrance that was built right next to the aviary, that makes it difficult to view it well or make photographs of the inhabitants.
@WhistlingKite24 Yes, spectacular indeed. I'd heard/read about it and seen pictures but seeing it in real life is something else.
You are very fortunate - well done. We have kept them for over 20 years, and bred them many times - several different birds in different combinations. A male is calling as I type - but, none of our staff have ever seen a male display!
@Andrew Swales Thank you for your comment. I didn't know it actually was that rare to see them displaying. I've seen great argus many times over the years in different zoos that keep and/or breed them, or have kept/bred them in the relatively recent past (Antwerp, Planckendael, Avifauna) but indeed I had never seen a display before. Not sure why the male was displaying - he was just prancing around the front of the aviary and suddenly displayed - and I sure did nothing special to provoke the animal (I never do that).
