The calf has been named Nayan, which means "eye" in Hindi. Why... I'm not sure.

The name of Janya for the zoo's last new elephant, was selected via a public poll. Janya spends all of her time away from the rest of the herd.

Cool, thanks. I can see he is very different from the elephants over here, but that might be because he has dirt all over him! What subspecies are the ones in Chester and here in Taronga, if anyone knows. Thanks

I think Chester's are Indian (I think that was what Zootierliste listed them as), not sure about Taronga though sorry.

Also, am I right in thinking that Janya is the bronze elephant in the city centre? If so, it had me thrown for a minute
