Mandrill 1985

This male Mandrill was born at Southport Zoo. He was exchanged with the previous London male to bring in unrelated blood to both groups. He was distinctive because of that upper canine which protruded outside his mouth. At that time London had a productive Mandrill group- a pity they phased them out as they'd be a much better display now than e.g. the Black and White Colobus which are very inactive.

I agree that the mandrills were a sad loss. They are still not a common sight in the UK.

I wish more zoos in the UK would keep them. Spectacular animals and they breed freely too- the groups at Colchester and Chester make good displays.
