This is an absolutely splendid habitat, and 1993 was a remarkable year at the zoo with the opening of new exhibits for mandrills, pygmy hippos, Sumatran tigers and small-clawed otters. Almost 20 years have gone by and those exhibits still hold up very well.

It's strange to think that many people would actually consider these as the most successful exhibits at the zoo and their quality is far superior to some of the newer exhibits that have been built since. A lot of the newer exhibits (Wild Sea, Orang-utan Sanctuary, Trail of the Elephants etc.) make more of an architectural statement than these immersion exhibits. This sounds similar to some of the opinions on here about San Diego reaching its peak with the Kopje exhibit.
