Must say with great enthusiasm and passion that am very very impressed with what have seen and heard about Hamilton Zoo. Looking over this map just solidifies it tenfold. Very impressed and quite intrigued by Hamilton really.
@steveroberts Hamilton undertook a major redevelopment in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s welcoming almost all their profile species - giraffe (1998), rhinos (1999), freeflight aviary (2000), Sumatran tiger (2001), Cheetah (2002), African wild dogs (2003) and Conmon chimpanzee (2004). A long period of stagnation followed, but some exciting new species are on the horizon including Clouded leopard and Spotted hyena.
Wow an interesting timeline and hard earned it sounds. Clouded Leopards and Spotted Hyena would be amazing: I hope Hamilton can continue with Fishing Cats simultaneously with Clouded Leopards, I remember you were also at the forefront of the ''its doesnt have to be either or'' debate (my friend calls it the 'crunchy/soft taco debate' from the El Paso commercials we use to have', punchline: 'why can't we have both' from shrugging little kid, but you likely grew up with the commercial too)
@steveroberts Haha I remember that commercial! Takes me back haha. But yes, I see no reason why we can’t the zoo can’t have Fishing cat AND Clouded leopard. Hamilton have already phased out Serval (as have Wellington) and Auckland are threatening to do the same. They should at a minimum be replacing these with the endangered small felids managed in the region.
