Markhor Exhibit Pre-Barrier

This is a view of the Markhor exhibit before the fences were added. The first time we released our male Markhor, half sedated, into the exhibit he escaped within twenty minutes and jumped into the Tiger yard. Good thing tigers weren\'t out. We considered another species but just opted to keep Markhors and erect barriers to prevent another escape.

This is a good exhibit for markhors, and I seem to remember a large family of them in there.

Yes at when you were there we had seven, one adult male, two adult females, and four kids. It's decent - I just wish it was a little more green and I think if we put hotwire in the area he escaped we could take down the barriers. I love this picture because the exhibit looks so much better without the fences.

I agree that the new barriers rather spoil the exhibit, although the footage of the escape (playing on a loop at the exhibit) is rather spectacular! Part of the problem may have been the complete paving of the exhibit; why would he want to stay in when there is a veritable salad bar outside?

@ Ungulate: I totally agree with you. I wish part of the exhibit was substrate so we could plant grass and bushes. However, the goats (all five of the them) would probably eat all of the vegetation before it could re-grow.

There is a fifteen foot high fence that blocks this "hole" as well as two other gaps. I'll try and find and post a picture near this angle of the exhibit with the fences.
