Matschie's Tree Kangaroo

She's just so unique with that white face. Most are browner. And I love how you can see just how long their tails really are in that shot. Great one again Mr. Wrinkly.

You can see the resemblance of its fellow marsupial, the opossum, in this shot. Is it just me? No particular possum species.

A tree kangaroo able to bumble along at ground level is doubtless a tree kangaroo secretly relieved. I can think of no mammal taxon so thoroughly ill-suited for its niche!

What? Have you actually seen their "niche"? It is larger than I have seen at other zoos; there are several perches and quite a few limbs for them to climb around; their meals and snacks are highly placed; they have lived there for many years and bred successfully.

They also eat bark and that's what she was doing on the ground, nibbling on a piece of bark which forms part of the groundcover, and which is refreshed, although I don't know how often.

Unfortunately their outdoor area has been corrupted by nature in recent years and the zoo has not found solutions yet.

I don't have a digital picture showing all of their habitat, but will put up one that shows a little more.

I don't think I got my message across...:)

Tree kangaroos are simply not adapted to be arboreal! If a troop of macaques had managed to get from Sulawesi to New Guinea they would have found an ecological niche ready for the taking!
