The mexican wolf or lobo binational breeding program manages over 300 canids that are in various different zoos that range from Chicago ( Brookfield) to Puebla (Africam Safari). The lobo program is surely the best example of cooperation between mexico and the U.S. in captive wildlife, wolves have been reintroduced in some protected areas. Joy was from Rio Grande Zoo and her mate was from Phoenix or Tucson. Her last 2 female offspring are at Chapultepec zoo and will be moved after or else a male wolf will arrive soon. There are mexican wolves at the following zoos in mexico: Chapultepec, Los Coyotes, Aragon, Africam safari, zooleon and Guadalajara. There are also lobos in federal wildlife programs that are not open to the public. The mexican wolf program is a case of binational cooperation at its finest. Like the northern jaguar project it is an example to follow.
On october 2011,5 captive born wolves released to a protected area in the state of Sonora. Lobos were wild again in mexico after many decades of extermination. I am very saddened to state that the leading mexican conservationist organization Naturalia has officialy stated that the wolves were poisoned. This horrible setback must not stop the lobo mexicano project, but only shows how difficult the reintroduction programs remain.
