Been trying to identify this young moray for quite some time, nothing quite matches. It was labeled in the aquarium store as "Peppered Moray" which produced nothing useful. Dug through quite a bit of literature and google searching but no luck. Fairly long (a good 15 inches/38 cm or so) but quite slender.
I wouldn't dare to say, but someone did post a photo of a remarkably similar animal here; http://www.wetwebmedia.com/MorayIDF6.html and people seem to believe it's Enchelycore nycturanus
@ralph That eel certainly is very similar indeed, probably a somewhat older specimen than this one. Wish I had a better side profile of the head to better assess jaw structure since apparently Gymnothorax johnsoni is pretty similar. Nonetheless very useful link, thanks!
