I hate these damn things. They have them even on the enclosures in zoos in New Zealand and China. My biggest peeve with them is when they replace all other signage entirely! What use is that for casual wanderers or people without phones?
This isn't a sign for a species though. I scanned it from this photo and it came up with a page about giraffes in the city which seems to be painted giraffes around London to advertise the zoo similar to the gorillas around Bristol or elephants around Melbourne.
WOW Pat I did wonder if the image would be operable, i wonder if my partner can access it on his I phone. The giraffe thing was what Colchester did for the zoo's 50th anniversary this year.

I do agree with Chlidonias though about replacing signage with these. You can't always guarantee that you'll have a phone on you and that it'll always be working.
