@Chlidonias I'm not sure about whether or not both species were kept and now I'm not sure which species is kept either, sorry. I went off the most recent media by @Hipporex which was stating that the mouse was leucogaster. This was coincidentally taken on the same day as a visit by me. Northern grasshopper mouse habitat - ZooChat Though checking this thread torridus is said to be kept. the Rodents kept by North American zoos
This species list by @Zoo Birding states that the southern species, torridus is kept. This list I trust to be very accurate. California Academy of Sciences & Steinhart Aquarium (As of 09/16/2022) [California Academy of Sciences]
Zootierliste states that both species were kept, the northern using the hipporex photo as a link while the southern states that it was signed and seen, this was likely inputted by me.
Back in 2022 the Academy of Sciences stated that they kept the southern species on their facebook page.
On biolib B. Kao or Ratiotile labeled his photos as torridus.
Sadly I don't have any signage photos of the mouse but the species it was exhibited next to was the Arizona bark scorpion Centruroides sculpturatus as a predator/prey set up, while both grasshopper mice overlap with the scorpion, the southern overlaps the most and is found in many of the same areas.
As the Academy does a lot of research, I would assume they may be breeding them, and as mice have short lifespans they may be switched out, perhaps the species were switched as well?
I would probably lean towards them keeping just the southern species, I likely don't have time for a visit to confirm in a while.
