nasty aviaries

December 2016
this was a row of aviaries in the Childrens Zoo, holding mainly birds of prey and parrots. I've posted three individual aviary photos as well to give an idea of their size in relation to the inhabitants. They were horrible dark boxes - the photos do light them up more than they were in real life.

One of my pet hates is how even in otherwise good and reputable zoos (of which Colombo Zoo generally is not), the cages in the Childrens Zoo area are very often terrible. They are often small and completely unsuitable for the animals they contain. I cannot explain this. I understand that the zoos want the children to be able to get close or to interact with the animals (although often the species shown are totally unsuitable for these purposes anyway), but really the cages in a childrens' area should be as good as you can possibly make them, in order to foster compassion and awareness in the children - not to give them the impression that animals are just there to be stuck in any old box.
