New barriers and automated gates were added to the Elephants of Asia exhibit (as well as at the Night Safari's elephant exhibit) recently. With these additions, WRS can transition to full protected contact elephant management. A new Asian elephant for the Zoo is still in the works, but the pandemic has probably set it back by a couple of years.
@Wyman I find them obtrusive too, and would have preferred a more natural-looking or sophisticated design. I guess there was time pressure to complete the works as quickly as possible as they were carried out while the elephants were still using the enclosure (they were sectioned off from the work zones with construction hoarding and hot wire).
