Maybe a garden on the roof, with creepers and tendrils trailing down over the side. If the garden was large enough it would also help insulate the building a bit.
One reason I believe this is a good design is that the irregular shapes and patterns of the building and the fences make them more interesting, allowing people's eyes to wander around and not be distracted by one solid object.
The silhouette (and this is nicely visible in this photo against the sky) is more pleasing than a straight line or a block.
The whole building looks less bulky, and in fact it looks almost natural, like a rock wall (from a distance at least). It even looks almost organic.
And really, compared to the original Elephant house next to it, it looks far less hokey.
