New Exhibit - May 2024

March 25, 2024
@pachyderm pro There's almost no information about this area, including any press releases from the institution.

California State of Nature is opening in May in the 'West Hall', which is next to the Rainforest dome. Back in 2011, this area was a Climate Change gallery (see photo below) but all of that is now gone. I leaned over the railing and saw several tree trunks and lots of signs in piles, but I don't really have anything else to go on besides that. The huge whale skeleton still hangs over it all.

The exhibit that this seems to be replacing is "Giants of Land and Sea" which I believe opened on June 15th of 2018. The exhibit consisted of many displays about coast redwoods, marine mammals, native plants and various other species. Highlights included full skeletons of elephant seals, various cetaceans like a beaked whale I believe, a taxidermied flying squirrel and skulls and other pieces of species like humpback and sperm whales. A large section of a coastal redwood was also on display. I may have pictures of the names of each specimen on display.
