The two new species for 2012 are Visayan warty pigs and warthogs (with kunekune pigs also being present in the farmyard area) and the major development on Asian Tropical Forest begins this fall. The middle pathway through the zoo (where the sloth bear and tiger icons are) will be closed until May of 2013, when a brand-new east-west pathway opens as well as a play area for kids and a small-clawed otter habitat. With that trail being temporarily closed this winter then visitors will be directed the long way around either north or south to reach the far sides of the zoo. By May of 2014 the Malayan tigers and sloth bears will have two new exhibits each (designed to look like one big one enclosure each) and the $21 million Asian complex will be complete. At that point the oldest and most outdated section of the zoo will be brand new!
I'm really excited to see if WP Zoo can live up to the expectations I have! If this new section will be as good and immersive as the rest of the wonderful exhibits of WP Zoo, then this might be another world class exhibit!
